Nói về khả năng của chủ ngữ → dùng CAN cho ngữ cảnh hiện tại, COULD cho ngữ cảnh quá khứ
- I can swim.
- Can you speak English?
- Dogs can't climb trees.
- My car can run very fast.
- I could swim when I was 5. (Sai: I can swim when I was 5.)
- He said he could help me.
Nói về khả năng xảy ra chuyện gì → dùng COULD, không dùng CAN.
- It could rain tomorrow. (Sai: It can rain tomorrow.)
- "Where's Amanda?" "I don't know. She could be with Josh." (Sai: ... She can be with Josh.)
Do đó, COULD dùng để phỏng đoán một khả năng trong tương lai.
Nói về các khả năng mà hoàn cảnh cho phép → dùng CAN nếu bạn khá chắc chắn, dùng COULD nếu không chắc chắn lắm.
- We can go to the beach this weekend. Or if you like, we can go to the mountains.
→ Hoàn cảnh hiện tại cho phép chúng ta làm những việc này, chứ đây không hẳn là khả năng thường trực của chúng ta. - We could go to the beach this weekend. Or if you like, we could go to the mountains.
→ Người nói chỉ đưa ra các giả thiết, chứ cũng chưa chắc là có thực hiện được không.
Yêu cầu ai đó làm việc gì một cách lịch sự → dùng CAN YOU hoặc COULD YOU đều được (COULD YOU lịch sự hơn một chút, nhưng cơ bản thì cũng như CAN YOU)

- Could you help me, please? (Chú ý: Không có nghĩa quá khứ gì ở đây cả.)
Đề nghị làm gì cho người khác → dùng CAN I hoặc COULD I
- Can / Could I help you?
Xin phép ai → dùng CAN I hoặc COULD I

- Can / Could I have some more tea?
Tuy nhiên, nếu bạn cho phép ai thì dùng CAN, không dùng COULD.
- "Can/Could I ask you something?" "Yes, of course you can." (Sai: ... of course you could.)
Nhìn chung, dùng CAN trong ngữ cảnh hiện tại, còn COULD trong ngữ cảnh quá khứ. Nếu COULD xuất hiện trong ngữ cảnh hiện tại, đó là do người nói muốn thể hiện tính không chắc chắn. Đó là lý do khi xin phép, yêu cầu, hay đề nghị làm gì cho ai, bạn có thể dùng COULD cho câu nói bớt tính áp đặt.

Despite being upgraded and renovated several times but the transport system of Vietnam has not improved as much. Traffic jams occur repeatedly in large cities damaging hundreds of billion per year, not only that the injuries related to traffic accidents is also increasing, especially head injuries , spine. Circulation of vehicles on roads, railways, waterways each year but with increasing road infrastructure can present data to help the traffic situation.
