LGBT gồm đồng tính, gay, song tính, chuyển giới - đây chính là thuật ngữ mô tả xu hướng tình dục của một người, cụ thể là khi họ có xu hướng tình dục với những người có cùng giới tính, yêu người cùng giới, ví dụ nam yêu nam, nữ yêu nữ, ngoài ra người song tính là sự mô tả một người là nam giới hoặc nữ giới đều bị thu hút tình yêu, tình dục bởi cả hai giới (tức là nam có thể yêu nữ, nam có thể yêu nam và ngược lại ở phái nữ cũng vậy).

Một nghiên cứu thống kê tại đất nước Mỹ, có khoảng 3,5% dân số được xác định là người đồng, người song tính và người muốn chuyển giới về giới tính thật của mình nhưng ngoài ra cũng có rất nhiều người không có cảm xúc tình dục với bất kỳ giới tính nào đây có thể được gọi là người vô tính.

Ở thời kỳ xa xưa, khi y học chưa phát triển, xã hội chưa hiện đại như ngày nay thì những người thuộc cộng đồng LGBT có thể bị coi là mắc bệnh tâm thần, mọi người không công nhận đây là một giới tính mà nghĩ người LGBT là những người bị tâm thần, có vấn đề về thần kinh. Nhưng kể từ ngày 15/7/1990 Liên Hiệp Quốc công bố LGBT không phải là một bệnh tâm thần - một cột mốc đáng nhớ với những người thuộc cộng đồng LGBT bởi họ đã chính thức được thừa nhận, được tự do sống với chính mình và được coi là một trong những cộng đồng của nhân loại.

Trong những năm gần đây, trên thế giới, cộng đồng LGBT ngày càng phát triển mạnh mẽ, ở Châu  âu, một số nước như Hà Lan, Tây Ban Nha,... đã chấp nhận hôn nhân đồng tính và coi đó là hôn nhân hợp pháp.
