Âm câm là "chữ cái câm" (silent letter) là các chữ cái xuất hiện trong từ tiếng Anh nhưng không được đọc ra:

Âm "h" (honest /ˈɑːnɪst/ ,when /wen/)

Âm "b" (lamb /læm/, thumb /θʌm/,..)

Âm "k" (knife /naɪf/,knee /niː/,...)

Âm "t" (fasten /ˈfæsən/, castle ˈkæsl/,...)

Dưới đây là 1 số nguyên tắc dành cho âm câm:

1.    B
Nguyên tắc 1: B không được phát âm khi đứng sau M ở cuối từ.
VD:  limb, crumb, dumb, comb, bomb, thumb.

Nguyên tắc 2: B không được phát âm khi đứng trước T thường là ở cuối từ nhưng không phải lúc nào cũng vậy.
VD:  debt, doubt, subtle, debtor, doubtful.

2.    C
Nguyên tắc: C không được phát âm khi trong từ có chứa “scle”.
VD:  muscle, sclerosis.
Ngoại lệ: Sclera, asclepiad.

3.    D
Nguyên tắc 1: D không được phát âm trong những từ phổ biến sau: Handkerchief, Wednesday, sandwich, handsome.
Nguyên tắc 2: D cũng không được phát âm khi trong từ có chứa DG.
VD:  Pledge, dodge, grudge, hedge.

4.    E
Nguyên tắc: E không được phát âm khi đứng cuối một số từ, và thường kéo dài âm của nguyên âm.
VD:  Hope, drive, gave, write, site, grave, bite, hide.

5.    G
Nguyên tắc: G thường không được phát âm khi đứng trước N.
VD:  Champagne, foreign, sign, foreign, design, align.
Ngoại lệ: Magnet, igneous, cognitive.

6.    GH
Nguyên tắc 1: GH không được phát âm khi đứng sau một nguyên âm.
VD:  Thought, through, thorough, borough, daughter, light, might, sigh, right, fight, weigh, weight.
Ngoại lệ: Doghouse, foghorn, bighead.

Nguyên tắc 2: GH đôi khi được phát âm như F.

VD:  rough, tough, laugh, enough, cough, clough, draught.

Ngoại lệ: Những ví dụ ở nguyên tắc 1!

7.    H
Nguyên tắc 1: H không được phát âm khi đứng sau W.
VD:  what, when, where, whether, why.

Nguyên tắc 2: H không được phát âm khi đứng đầu một số từ (đừng quên dùng mạo từ “an” với H câm).
VD:  hour, honest, honour, heir.

8.    K
Nguyên tắc: K không được phát âm khi đứng trước N ở đầu từ.
VD:  knife, knee, know, knock, knowledge.

9.    L
Nguyên tắc: L không được phát âm khi đứng sau A, O, U.
VD:  calm, half, talk, walk, would, should, could, calf, salmon, yolk, chalk
Ngoại lệ: Halo, bulk, sulk, hold, sold.

10.    N
Nguyên tắc: N không được phát âm khi đứng sau M ở cuối từ.
VD:  Autumn, column.

11.    P
Nguyên tắc: P không được phát âm khi đứng đầu một số từ sử dụng tiền tố “psych” và “pneu”.
VD: Pneuma, psychotherapy, psycho, psychologist.

12.    PH
Nguyên tắc: PH đôi khi được phát âm như F.
VD:  telephone, paragraph, alphabet.

13.    S
Nguyên tắc: S không được phát âm trong những từ sau:
Island, isle, aisle, islet.

14.    T
Nguyên tắc: T không được phát âm trong những từ phổ biến sau:
Castle, Christmas, fasten, listen, often, whistle, bustle, hasten, soften.

15.    U
Nguyên tắc: U không được phát âm khi đứng sau G và đứng trước một nguyên âm trong cùng một từ.
VD:  guess, guidance, guitar, guest, guild, guard.

16.    W
Nguyên tắc 1: W không được phát âm ở đầu một từ khi nó đứng trước R.
Ex:  wrap, write, wrong, wring, wrap.

Nguyên tắc 2: W không được phát âm trong những từ sau:
Who, whose, whom, whole, whoever.
