Who được sử dụng như một chủ ngữ (Subject) còn whom được sử dụng như một bổ ngữ (Object).
Ví dụ:
Who is at the door? (Ai đang đứng ngoài cửa thế?)
Whom did you see at the door? (Bạn nhìn thấy ai đứng ngoài cửa thế?)
Whom được sử dụng như bổ ngữ của một vài giới từ như: to, for, about, under, over, after, và before.

Who
Ta sử dụng Who để chỉ người. Người được nhắc đến ở đầu là chủ thể gây ra hành động trong câu (Who+Verb)
Ví dụ
- John, who is working for Google, will get married next month.
- Who is responsible for the mistake?
Whom
Whom cũng được dùng để chỉ người trong câu như Who. Tuy nhiên, khác với Who, Whom dùng để nói về người mà hành động trong câu hướng tới.
Ví dụ
- Gandhi is someone whom many people admire.
- Do you know whom Leah is talking to.
Trong tường hợp nói về số lượng người, từ Whom được sử dụng và có dạng là of whom. Mục đích là để nói về số lượng người mà hành động trong câu nhắm tới. Khi chủ ngữ là một nhóm người, of whom được dùng nói về số lượng người nhất định trong nhóm đó. Khi đấy, câu sẽ bao gồm Quantifier (từ chỉ số lượng)+ of whom+ other information.

This morning, the weather was so cold that everyone had to wear a thick coat. It is only 16oC. I didn't prefer this kind of weather very much. But from lunch until now, the weather is sunny again. It is not only sunny but it is also very warm. It is about 23oC. I don't really like or really hate this weather but anyway, I prefer sunny weather to cold weather like this morning.
On my way to school this morning, the sky was quite cold and windy, so I have to wear a jacket to school, even it's 27o in Ho Chi Minh City! But from noontime, the sky gets hotter and more sunny, so I have to wear a hat. I don't really like this kind of weather, it makes me very headache, so I am having a flu. I prefer cooler weather like partly sunny to hot weather like this morning.
