1. Tropical forests cover only 6% of the Earth's land but are some of the most diverse and rich ecosystems in the world. These forests are home to many different plants, animals, insects, and mammals. About 80% of the world's known species live in tropical rainforests, making them an essential part of nature. However, the destruction of these forests is contributing to the environmental crisis.
2. These forests have different layers. The tallest trees create the canopy, where many flowers and fruits grow, providing food for animals like toucans and sloths. Under the canopy, smaller trees provide shelter for birds, reptiles, and predators like jaguars. The forest floor receives little sunlight but is full of fungi and insects that help the forest function properly.
3. Tropical forests are important habitats and provide food for both people and animals. They play an important role in the water cycle, help reduce climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, and provide jobs for local communities.
4. Sadly, two-thirds of the world's forest loss happens in tropical and subtropical regions. From 2004 to 2017, over 43 million hectares of forest were lost in these areas, which is about the size of Morocco.
