Save Our Shores

Dear Students,

We are excited to invite you to join our “Save Our Shores” (1)__________ to help protect the beauty of our local beaches! This is a fantastic chance to work together, clean up the beach, and learn how we can protect marine life.

Event Details:

- Date: Saturday, October 28th

- Time: 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

- Location: Sunrise Beach

Homeless people face many challenges, but they show great strength in difficult situations. In cities like Los Angeles and New York, high living (1) _______ and changes in neighborhoods make homelessness worse. Mental health problems and drug addiction, (2) _______ are worsened by poor healthcare, are also important causes of homelessness in cities like Moscow and Paris.

In places like Johannesburg and São Paulo, social (3) _______ and racism push some people to live on the streets. Fast-growing cities like Manila and Mumbai have many people without homes (4) _______ there is not enough support for them.

Family problems and domestic violence are also major reasons why people (5) _______ up homeless. These different causes of homelessness vary in each city, showing that homelessness is a complex issue that affects many parts of the world.

British and American English are not only different in spelling and vocabulary (1) __________ in grammar. One example is how they use collective nouns. In American English, these nouns are singular (e.g. The band is playing). In British English, (2) __________ can be singular or plural, but people usually use the plural form (e.g. The band are playing).

British people often use formal words like “shall” while Americans prefer (3) __________ words like “will” or “should”. (4) __________ difference is the past participle of “get”. Americans say “gotten”, but British people only use “got”.

The (5) __________ "needn't" is frequently used in British English, but it is rarely heard in American English. Instead, Americans say "don't need to".

When talking about time and place, British English uses “at” while American English uses “on” for time and “in” for place.

These differences show how both (6) __________ of English have developed uniquely.

1. I was in Israel for a business trip and decided to explore a little by taking weekend trips. One day, I went to the bank to get some cash and thought I'd use the restroom before continuing my journey. I hung my purse on the hook, locked the door, used the bathroom, and washed my hands. But when I tried to open the door, it wouldn't budge! I tried turning the lock in different directions, but it didn't work. I didn't know much Hebrew, so I knocked on the door and said “Slicha” (which means “excuse me”). A woman came and told me to turn the lock in both directions. Then a man came and gave the same advice. I told him I had already done that, but he said, “No, the other lock.” I realised that the hook I thought was for my purse was actually a second lock. Embarrassed, I quickly left the bank.

2. From this, I learned two things: It's important to know some basic phrases of the local language, and staying calm can help avoid embarrassing situations.

1. Son Doong Cave is located in Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh Province, Central Vietnam.

2. The story of how it was discovered is quite fascinating. In 1991, a local man named Ho Khanh was searching for shelter from a storm in the forest. He came across a cave opening where he saw fog rising and heard strange, loud noises. Scared by what he saw, Khanh left and didn't explore the cave any further, missing the chance to discover the world's largest cave.

3. Years later, in 2001, Khanh was a guide for a cave exploration team led by Howard Limbert. Khanh told them about his earlier encounter with the mysterious cave. Limbert believed it could be a significant find. However, it wasn't until 2009, after several failed attempts, Khanh and the British Cave Research Association found Son Doong Cave. The entrance was hidden deep in the jungle, in rough terrain, making it difficult to find.

4. It gained international attention when the cave was officially discovered on April 5, 2009. Many media outlets reported on it, and film crews from countries like the UK, US, Japan, and Germany visited to capture its beauty.
