School life in England
This page tells you about life at school, in particular about the timetable of a typical day in a primary school or in a secondary school, about school subjects including physical education (PE), school meals, school uniform, assembly and religious education, teaching and learning and important people in schools.
Timetable of a typical day
Schools do not all have the same timetable, but most schools will follow a similar routine of a typical day at school.
In primary school
- Registration: first thing in the morning, as you arrive in your classroom, the teacher does the ‘register’ calling everyone’s name and checking that everybody has arrived at school on time. If someone is absent, the teacher will inform the school office.
- Assembly: meeting of teachers and children at a set time during the day. In some schools, this includes prayers and religious songs.
- Literacy (English)
- Numeracy (Maths)
- Morning break or playtime: you have a break and normally go outside to play
- Lunch break and playtime: you have a break to have your lunch and play
- Other subjects - see section on school subjects below
Example of a typical day in primary school
In secondary school
- Registration or tutor time: time when you will join your tutor group at the beginning, middle or end of each school day for your name to be marked in the register and to receive important information
- Period (lesson) 1
- Period 2
- Morning break
- Period 3
- Assembly: meeting of teachers and children at set times during the week. In some schools, this might include prayers and religious songs.
- Lunch break and playtime
- Period 4
- Period 5
- Tutor group/end of school registration.
This is an example of a typical day in secondary school which includes 5 periods of 55 minutes each
School subjects and national curriculum
You will study lots of different subjects both at primary and secondary school. These subjects follow the national curriculum. This is a programme of education designed by the government to make sure everyone is taught the same things and to the same standards in all schools in England. The usual subjects are:
- Maths (number, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability)
- English (language and literature)
- Science (chemistry, physics and biology)
- Geography
- History
- Religious education (RE)
- Information and communication technology or ICT (using computers)
- Design and technology (woodwork, metalwork, textiles, food, graphics)
- Physical education or PE (sports, games, athletics, dance)
- Creative arts (art, music, drama, dance)
- Modern foreign languages (French, German, Spanish or other languages)
- Personal, social and health education (PSHE) and citizenship
Physical education (PE)
Boys and girls must take part in physical education both in primary and secondary schools. Most schools will ask you to wear a PE kit, which is a set of clothes chosen by the school for this activity. It often includes wearing a T-shirt, shorts or jogging bottoms.
If you are worried about privacy when you change your clothes for PE, or whether the PE kit covers your body enough, please talk to your form tutor (in a secondary school) or your class teacher (in a primary school).
School meals
At most schools you can choose between having school dinner or packed lunch.
School dinners are often freshly prepared in school and children can choose from a selection of healthy meals. You may be able to have free school meals, for example if your parents or carers are asylum seekers, receive job-seekers allowance, income support, employment and support allowance, etc.
School uniform
Children and young people wear a uniform in most primary and secondary schools. You can find information about the uniform from the school website.
School uniform items, e.g. dresses, trousers, shirts and shoes, can be bought cheaply from most supermarkets.
Secondary school uniforms are similar to primary schools, but sometimes school blazers with the school logo on the pocket are also worn. Some schools are very strict about their uniform policies and others are more relaxed. Sometimes schools have second-hand uniforms available to buy, especially more expensive items like blazers.
Assembly and religious education
During assembly, there are often prayers or religious music, usually of Christian faith.
You will probably also have at least one religious education (RE) lesson a week. RE should cover the main religious faiths. Some schools may spend a substantial amount of time on Christianity.
Your parents have got the right to ask that you not not attend assembly and/or religious education. If you are over 16 you have the right to decide yourself not to attend. For more information,

My dream house is a large villa. It is near the coast, surrounded by rows of coconut trees and the blue sea. There are sixteen rooms in my house and half of them for relaxation and entertainment. It has a big garage so that I can store my super cars there. My house has wind power or solar energy. I use hi-tech and automatic machines such as a smart clock, modern fridge, automatic dishwasher and washing machine. They can be controlled by voice and help me tell the time, forecast weather, preserve food and wash dishes and clothes. There is a super smart TV in my house. I might surf the internet, watch my favourite TV programmes from space or contact friends on other planets by this fantastic TV. I might also join online classes on TV and not have to go to school.

My hobby is swimming. It is also my favorite sport since I was little. I learned it from my father. He’s a good swimmer.
Swimming has four main strokes. They are crawl stroke, breast stroke, back crawl stroke, and butterfly stroke. My favourite swimming styles is breast stroke. In this stroke the arms and legs work in turn. First the arms pull, then the legs kick and the whole body glides forward with arms and legs straight. I also butterfly and I can do crawl and backstroke, too but not very well.
I go to the swimming pool four or five times a week., and in every week. I prace a lot to improve my swimming skills. I want to achieve good results. Last month I paripated in a swimming competition in town with twenty – five more swimmers and I won first prize.
Swimming is not just a leisure time’s activity but has many advantages that are good for human’s health. It helps me to keep fit. With swimming, I can burn 25% of my body’s fat. Besides that, with swimming I can free from asthma. Swimming also keeps you safe in the water. Swimming is interesting and pleasant, it is a good choice for a hobby.

Pho is considered a national treasure; so much so that the soup even warranted a conference years ago, covering the social, culinary and historic aspects of the dish.
"Pho was very special, almost a status food. We loved it because it had everything we valued – rice noodles, broth, meat and vegetables. It was complete, nutritious, infinitely delicious and yet so easy to digest that we could eat it morning and night, day after day," said Huu Ngoc, a renowned expert on Vietnamese culture.
Ngoc even writes Bat Pho Hoa Giai (literally known as pho – a noodle bowl of conciliation) to retell about a meeting between American and Vietnamese war veterans in the capital city.
"Pho – a specialty of Hanoians – has been presented to every corner of the material and spiritual life of human beings and has witnessed current affairs… That's a food of a cultural category," he wrote.
In the book, Vietnamese Street Food, Tracey Lister and Andreas Pohl describe pho as being glorious and undoubtedly the most famous and quintessential Ha Noi street food.
They quote Ngoc's words to say that the dish is no less than "Viet Nam's contribution to human happiness".
Where pho originally came from remains a mystery. But there is certainly no shortage of creative theories.
In his book, Pho, a Specialty of Ha Noi (2006), co-written with American author Lady Borton, author Ngoc indicates that the birthplace of pho was in the village of Van Cu in Nam Dinh Province. Villagers do not know who created it. But they say that in 1925 a villager named Van moved to Ha Noi and opened a pho stall.
The dish was also adopted in the south in the late 1950s, when it crossed the border of the then-divided Viet Nam. However, the recipe changed in the process. In HCM City and other places in the Southern region, the dish is served in larger bowls, with the addition of aroma herbs and fresh bean sprouts. It's often served with extra condiments such as sugar and hoisin sauce.
However, To Hai, a pho purist, in order to taste the best, the dish should stay true to the Hanoian style: a simple soup that has a deep, rich, meaty and lightly spiced flavour, with a subtle hint of sweetness.
"The secret to a great pho is the broth – the broth will make or break your soup," he said. — VNS
