My Hobby |
|
My hobby is reading. I read story books, magazines, newspapers and any kind of material that I find interesting.
This hobby got started when I was a little boy. I had always wanted my parents to read fairy tales and other stories to me. Soon they got fed up and tired of having to read to me continually. So as soon as I could, I learned to read. I started with simple ABC books. Soon I could read simple fairy tales and other stories. Now I read just about anything that is available. Reading enables me to learn about so many things that I would otherwise not know. I learned about how people lived in bygone days of magic and mystery. I learned about the wonders of the world, space travel, human achievements, gigantic whales, tiny viruses and other fascinating things of our world. The wonderful thing about reading is that I do not have to learn things the hard way. For example, I do not have to catch a disease to know that it can kill me. I know the danger so I can avoid it. Also I do not have to go deep into the jungle to learn about the tiger. I can read all about it in a book. Books provide the reader with so much information and facts. They have certainly helped me in my daily life. I am better equipped to cope with living. Otherwise I would go about ignorantly learning things the hard way. So I continue to read. Besides being more informed about the world, I also spend my time profitably. It is indeed a good hobby. A. Aswer the questions 1. What is his hobby ? -> His hobby is reading. 2. How does he find reading ? -> He finds it a good hobby. 3. When did he start his hobby ? -> He started it when he was a boy. 4. Why did his parents get fed up and tired of telling him ? -> Because they had to read to him continually. 5. What did he start reading ? -> He started with simple ABC books. 6. What does he read about ? -> Now he reads just about anything that is available. 7. Does reading help him a lot ? -> Yes, it does. 8. Have books certainly helped him in his daily life ? -> Yes, they have. B. Find the word in the reading having the same meaning : 1. happening in a past time = bygone 2. deal successfully with a difficult situation = cope with 3. having a lot of knowledge = informed 4. start = go about 5. stories that sb tells that are not true ; a lie = fairy tales 6. extremely large = gigantic 7. an area of tropical forest = jungle 8. very small in size or amount = tiny |

Energy is one of the problems that many people are interested in. It is not an unfamiliar word. It is heard, said, discussed day after day. It is close to everyone’s daily life. You turn on a lamp and it is energy that gives you light. You turn on a TV and it is energy that gives you pictures and sound. You ride a motorcycle and it is energy that gives you movement. You cook your meals and it is energy that gives you heat to boil rice.
The problem is that the demand for energy is rising and that the price of energy is getting higher and higher. The supply of energy on earth is limited. It can not provide us forever. The shortage of energy in the future is inevitable. Therefore, saving energy is a must if we want to continue to live in a safe and sound world. IX. Read the film review, and decide whether the statements are true (T), or false (F), and tick the correct box.
Have you ever read Alice In Wonderland, by Lewis Carol? I did and I really like it. It’s an adventure story full of magic and danger. Yesterday I saw Tim Burton’s version of the film at the cinema.
This story is about Alice, who is now a teenager. A man wants to marry her, but she runs away and falls downa rabbit hole. She travels to Wonderland, which she has visited before as a child, and meets a lot of amazing characters on her adventures.
There are a lot of good special effects in the film. The Red Queen, played by Helena Bonham Carter, is very scary, and Johnny Depp is brilliant as the Mad Hatter. He has acted in a lot of films before but this is my favourite one. Mia Waslkowska is good as Alice; this is her first big film and I think she’s going to become a big star!
Overall, I think this is a good film for teenagers, but it’s a bit long. You should see it if you like fantasy and adventure, but don’t go if you like romances: it’s not a love story.

One of my favorite is from Vietnam. It’s about two sisters, Tam and Cam. The two sisters are very different. Tam works hard every day helping to cook and clean the house. She always thinks about other people and tries to help her family. Cam is very different to Tam. She never does any chores and she doesn’t share anything. Cam does lots of bad things to Tam. It’s not a nice story, but in the end, Tam’s life is very good. I like this story because after such a hard life she is happy.
