LISTENING: Listen and complete it with the missing word(s)

So, welcome to your introductory geography lecture. We'll begin with some basics. Firstly. what do we learn by (1)……………………............………? Well, we learn a great deal about all the processes that have affected and that continue to affect the earth's surface. But we learn far more than that, because studying geography also informs us about the different kinds of relationships that develop between a (2)…………......………………… and the people that live there. Okay. We like to think of geography as having two main branches. There's the study of the nature of our planet - its physical features, what it actually looks like- and then there's the study of the ways in which we choose to live and of the impact of those on our planet. Our current use of carbon fuels is a (3)……………............................……………. of that. But there are more specific study areas to consider too, and we'll be looking at each of these in turn throughout this semester. These include bio-physical geography, by which I mean the study of the natural environment and all its living things. Then there's topography that looks at the shapes of the land and oceans. There's the study of political geography and social geography too, of course, which is the study of communities of people, We have (4)………….........................………………. which we examine all kinds of resources and their use - agriculture, for example. Next comes historical geography- the understanding of how people and their environments and the ways they interact have changed over a period of time - and (5)……………………....................…….., an aspect l'm particularly interested in, which takes as its focus the location of cities, the services that those cities provide, and migration of people to and from such cities. And lastly, we have cartography. That's the art and science of map- making. You'll be doing a lot of that! So, to summarise before we continue, we now have our (6)…………………………...……..  is important because without geographical knowledge, we would know very little about our surroundings and we wouldn't be able to identify all the problems that relate to them. So, by definition, we wouldn't be in an (7)………….............................…………….. to work out how to solve any studying this of them.

Okay, now for some practicalities. What do geographers actually do? Well, we collect data to begin with! You'll be doing a lot of that on your (8)…………………….......................…….! How do we do this? There are several means. We might, for example, conduct a census - count a population in a given area perhaps. We also need images of the earth's surface which we can produce by means of computer-generation technology or with the help of (9)…………………................................……….. We've come a very long way from the early exploration of the world by sailing ships when geographers only had pens and paper at their disposal. After we've gathered our information, we must analyse it! We need to look for patterns, most commonly those of (10)……………………............................... This kind of information helps us to predict and resolve problems that could affect the world we live in. But we don't keep all this information confidential. We then need to publish our findings so that other people can access it and be informed by it. And one way in which this information can be published is in the (11)…………...........................…………….. You'll all have used one at some stage of your life already. Let's consider the benefits of maps from a geographer's perspective.

Maps can be folded and put in a pocket and can provide a great store of reference when they're collected into an atlas. They can depict the physical features of the entire planet if necessary, or, just a small part of it in much (12)…………………............................….. But there is a drawback. You can't exactly replicate something that is three-dimensional, like our planet, on a flat piece of paper, because paper has only two dimensions, and that means there'll always be a certain degree of distortion on a map. It can't be avoided. We can also use (13)…………………......................……… the earth. These are great for showing all kinds of geographical features that are not easy to see from the ground. You can easily illustrate areas of diseased trees or how much traffic is on the roads at a given time or information about deep sea beds, for example. pictures taken by cameras at (14)…………….....................................….. above ... Then there are Landsats. These are satellites that circle the earth and transmit visual information to computers at receiving stations. They circle the earth several times a day and can provide a mass of information - you'll all be familiar with the information they give us about the weather, for example. So, what we're going to do now is look at a (15)……….....………....………. in which you'll see all these tools.

Where we do differ from other life forms; however, it is in our ability to record and learn from our collective history. In this, it appears that we are unique. There is still too much mankind does not know about the earliest humans, of course not, but we are increasingly becoming a species with detailed knowledge that about our past. The more we learn from, the betterare our chances of survival in the future. It must also me recognized; however, that we are also the only species on Earth in which has managed to createthe mean of destroy the planet we live on.

Unlike buried treasure and some minerals, fossils are usually not valuable in themselves. However, most of the fossils you find will be of greatest value to you. They will help you learn much about the geologic history of the earth and its inhabitants.

If it were not for fossils, we would have no way of knowing about the animals that once roamed the earth or that once crawled on the bottom of the ancient seas. In fact, we would not even know for sure that there were once seas in some regions if it were not for the many fossils of sea animals that we find there.

You can look at some fossils and see for yourself the shape of the ancient animals. Even if you collect only bits of one kind of fossil, you may still be able to tell what it looked like. Making sense out of fossil bits is a little like working a jigsaw puzzle. Sometimes you will lose pieces, but you can still recognize the picture and even use your imagination to fill in missing details. The habits of ancient sea animals are not so easy to determine. Therefore, scientists study the structure and the habits of similar living animals to learn what the ancient ones must have been like. There are some things, however, that neither the study of fossils nor the study of living animals can tell us. For example, no one knows what colour most ancient sea animals were. Also, since the soft parts disappeared soon after death, many details of their internal structure are unknown. So the pictures of ancient sea creatures (as well as dinosaurs!) are what scientists think the animals looked like. Reconstructing the life of an ancient sea animal on the basis of fossil evidence and the characteristics of similar living animals is a little like relying on circumstantial evidence in court.

Air pollution

We are nowadays becoming more aware of pollution matters that affect dramatically our lives; especially there is growing concern about air pollution. There are some reasons that lead to this kind of pollution. Firstly, the development of industrial zones, factories and building construction areas is producing a large amount of dust and poisonous air. Especially in the developing countries, people rarely pay their attention to the air treatment process that make the air pollution condition even worse. Secondly, because of the increasing unrbanization, it can be easily seen that there is always a lot of traffic in rush hour and dust one the road these days. The smoke from vehicles and manufacturing exhaust increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the air which makes us feel really hard to breathe. The consequences are very bed. Smog and dust can do serious harm to our health and especially our lungs. We have thousands of asthma and adult respiration distress cases each year which raise concern about the air quality. Moreover, acid rains are becomning more and more popular which damage crops and fields. Many people believe that air pollution is also causing global warming and it is difficult to improve the air without the efforts of all countries around the world.

..........................................................................................................................................................

2. Do developing countries take the air treatment process into carful consideration?

A load of rubbish

Line

In the UK, people are finally starting to listen to the message about recycling. British families now recycle about 22% of their waste. Only for five years ago, the figure was 10%. That’s good news for the environment- but there’s a lot more than to do. Some other European countries, like Germany and Holland, already recycle about 60% of their waste and that’s the goal for the UK.

Households in England which produce 25 million tons of waste a year. More than half of this is garden waste, paper, cardboard and kitchen waste – with which people could recycle. They could also recycle plastic, wood, glass and aluminum cans. In fact, if everybody in the UK was recycled all of their drink cans, there would be 14 million fewer rubbish bins of waste each year.

Recycling isn’t the only way to reduce the amount of rubbish what we throw away. More than 40% of the waste in our bins is packaging from shopping. If we changed the way to we shop, we could easily reduce the amount of waste. For example, street markets and small shops often use less packaging than supermarkets. And being of course, if we grow our own vegetables, there wouldn’t be any packaging at all.

II/ Read the passage. Then write True or False for each of the sentences below. (1.5pt)

In the UK we each use about two hundred steel food and drink cans every year. Steel cans are popular because they are convenient, easy to store and unbreakable. But when you have finished with a can what do you do with it? Do you throw it away and forget all about it? Probably! But behind the scenes there are people whose work is to make sure that the steel is never wasted. In fact, recycling or re-using steel cans is so successful that every day of the year more than five million cans start new lives in new steel products.

After you have thrown away your can, what happens? Well, first of all it is collected by the men who empty your dustbin each week and take to a tip, together with all the other household rubbish. Then the rubbish is sorted and the steel cans are taken separately to a special factory which turns old cans into high quality steel. It’s this steel that may well find its way back into your home in the form of knives and folks, garden equipment and, of course, food and drink cans.

So next time you open your fizzy drink, just remember where your can may have been!
